Great but a few small flaws October 31, 2009

I bought a WORX rather than the Black & Decker on the advice of garden shop staff when I was in New York. I needed a cordless unit because my garden layout requires a lot of power-cord shifting, and after 3 years of that I realized there is a better way. The 20" WORX is longer than my corded one so I can reach tall spots easier. It has easily the cutting power of the corded unit, and I have been surprised how long the battery lasts - I can do my entire usual job of about a solid half hour of trimming with power to spare, and of course it takes much less time than before because I don't have to move an extension cord around.
Now the negatives: the "one-hour charger" is a figment of a marketer's imagination. The initial charge took 4 hours and subsequent charges take about three. Not a real problem since I am done for the month by the time the battery needs recharging. The other problem was difficulty in assembling the handle, which is also a safety switch. The assembly instructions are very minimal and it didn't turn on at first because the switch pin on the trimmer body was not engaging. It was impossible to reverse the assembly steps so I had to take all the screws out of the handle and reassemble it, but at least it worked then. All's well now and I am happy with it, especially since the only other battery trimmer available here is a Bosch that costs 3 times as much (and the name Bosch no longer means superior quality).

Overall, my husband likes the hedge trimmer. He just wishes he did not have to press both "on" buttons at the same time in order to be able to extend his arm farther over the object being trimmed. Only taking an hour for charging purposes is a plus. He is considering getting another battery to extend the working period.

I've waited two seasons to review this product to give it a fair test. It's still working like the day I got it. I have multiple bushes from evergreens to a privet hedge on a double lot and this thing handles them with no problem. Battery life is excellent. I can do all my bushes, take the same battery over to my mom's (she has two large bushes and a hedge) to do her trimming and still have power to spare. I bought an extra battery at the same time I purchased the trimmer but didn't really need to. I've had gas and corded electric trimmers and this one puts them to shame. Great trimmer, I would highly recommend it to anyone. Because of this tool I'm going to get the Worx string trimmer next spring.
